Green Hornet Coming to the Big Screen

March 22, 2007

Remember the short-lived TV show which introduced Bruce Lee to American audiences as the trustworthy, crime-fighting side-kick Kato? The series starred Van Williams as Britt Reid/The Green Hornet and debuted on ABC in 1966.

Columbia Pictures has now optioned the rights to The Green Hornet with the purpose of bringing the masked-fighter to life on the big screen. Neal H. Moritz will produce.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Moritz was a huge fan of the show when he was young and had spent the past year chasing the rights.

"I've been waiting, waiting, waiting for a long time," Moritz said. "From the first time I saw that show, I just loved it. I loved the characters. And I love the idea of a guy who is indebted to another guy for life because (the latter) saved his life." The Green Hornet

Columbia Pictures already has its multi-blockbuster hit in comic book hero Spiderman, with the newest installation in theaters May 4th.

In addition to Green Hornet, Columbia Pictures also wants to bring The Shadow to the screen as a new franchise.

The Green Hornet began as a radio program on Detroit’s WXYZ in 1936 and ran until 1952 on NBC Blue (later ABC) Network. The program creators also created the adventures series, The Lone Ranger.

Despite the huge interest in Bruce Lee and his chauffeur by profession, martial arts fighting character Kato, the Green Hornet TV series was cancelled after just one year in 1967. In Hong Kong, the show was called “The Kato Show” rather than "The Green Hornet", due to Lee’s popularity.

There have been talks over the last decade of reviving The Green Hornet with top name actors from George Clooney to Jet Li unoffically attached to the roles.

The TV series’ trademark theme music "Flight of the Bumblebee" was also featured during the scene.
